Financial statements

Financial statements for lenders, partners and you.

Compilation and review engagements, ready for your bank, investors or shareholders.

What's included

Two levels of financial statements.

Compilation engagements

We compile your financial statements from your records. No assurance is provided. Most owner-managed corporations and many lenders need only this.

Review engagements

We perform inquiry and analytical procedures and provide limited assurance. Some lenders and agreements require this level.

Year-end support

Adjusting entries, schedules and notes prepared so year-end runs smoothly.

How it works

What to expect at year-end.

Compilation engagements

Prepared under the Canadian standard for compilation engagements (CSRS 4200), which replaced the old Notice to Reader. We compile your statements from your records and you review and approve them before they're issued.

  • Balance sheet and income statement
  • Notes describing the basis of accounting
  • A compilation engagement report
  • Corporate tax return prepared from the same numbers

Review engagements

Prepared under the Canadian standard for review engagements (CSRE 2400). We perform inquiry and analytical procedures and issue a report providing limited assurance, which some lenders, investors and agreements require.

  • Financial statements under ASPE or another framework
  • Review engagement report
  • Discussion of significant findings with management

What we need from you

Up-to-date books, bank and loan statements, and details of major purchases, loans and shareholder transactions. If your books need work first, we can bring them current.

Guide

Compilation or review: choosing the right financial statements.

Most private companies and non-profits need financial statements once a year. The question is which level your lender, investors or board actually require, because the work and cost are quite different.

Compilation engagements

A compilation is the most common choice for owner-managed companies. Under the Canadian standard (CSRS 4200), which replaced the Notice to Reader in December 2021, we compile your statements from your records and you review and approve them. No assurance is provided, and the statements disclose the basis of accounting used.

Review engagements

A review gives limited assurance. Under the Canadian standard (CSRE 2400), we perform inquiry and analytical procedures and issue a review engagement report. Reviews are usually prepared under Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises, or Accounting Standards for Not-for-Profit Organizations for non-profits.

Which one do you need?

Check your loan agreement, bonding requirements, shareholder agreement or funding agreements. If none of them require a review or an audit, a compilation is usually enough, and it costs less.

Who usually asks for statements

  • Banks and lenders, often to check loan covenants
  • Bonding companies, for contractors bidding on larger jobs
  • Shareholders and investors
  • Landlords for commercial leases
  • Funders and members of non-profits and societies

How the process works

  • Your books are brought up to date and reconciled
  • We post year-end adjustments and prepare the statements and notes
  • We discuss the results with you before anything is issued
  • For corporations, the tax return is prepared from the same numbers

When you need an audit

Some lenders, larger non-profits and funding agreements require audited statements. We don't perform audits, but we can keep your books audit-ready and introduce you to partner firms that provide audit services.

Questions

Common questions.

Which do I need, a compilation or a review?

Check your loan or shareholder agreement. If neither requires a review, a compilation is usually enough.

Do you perform audits?

No, we don't perform audits. We provide bookkeeping for organizations that need an audit, whether non‑profit or for‑profit, and we work with partner firms that provide audit services and can introduce you to them.

Can you work from books kept by someone else?

Yes. We'll review your records and let you know if anything needs to be cleaned up first.

What replaced the Notice to Reader?

The compilation engagement standard, CSRS 4200, which took effect in December 2021.

Can you prepare statements for a non-profit?

Yes, including under Accounting Standards for Not-for-Profit Organizations.
